The repercussions of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen go much deeper than displacement. Hunger and famine play no favorites, and can tear stable families apart. At a local hospital, we came across little Mohamed Saqr, whose father told us their heartbreaking story.
Mohamed’s father, Hamud, worked on a thriving farm. Even in the hardest times, he was able to rely on the stability of his work.
He was excited to welcome Mohamed into the world. Sixteen (16) months later, his son has spent more than half his age on life support.
“He was a healthy boy for six months, until he developed chronic vomiting and diarrhea.”
“Now he suffers from severe malnutrition. He has had constant treatment, but he has only gotten worse since we’ve been here.”
Mohamed’s extended stay at the hospital has been an emotional burden for his family, and now they are no longer able to afford the cost of treatment.
“We were in a good situation before, but now everything has turned horrible. We are out of money, Mohamed needs medicine and care, but everything requires money.”
“We even sold my mother’s jewelry and my rifle to pay for his treatment.”
A drought has ravaged the countryside, leaving farmers with nowhere to turn. Hamud has been forced to move into a small room in his Uncle’s dirt house near the hospital. Through it all, his focus remains on the well-being of his son.
“My biggest struggle is my son’s illness. I just want him to be healthy. We’ve tried so many different things, it is hard not to see any results. He is so small, yet his life has been so difficult…”
A depressed father stares into empty space as emotion swells up in his throat. He looks at Mohamed, deteriorating beside him, and is unable to hold back his own tears as he comes to the grim realization that little Mohamed could die.
“If the Almighty wishes for him to live, he will live. If he has other plans… we will have to accept what is willed.”
Having to deal with such a horrible situation would break the heart of any father.
The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is one of the worst the world has ever seen. Gut-wrenching stories are becoming the norm under these conditions.
Unfortunately, this is just one of thousands of cases. For every child we find, imagine how many thousands of others suffer and die with no voice to cry for help.
A few dollars goes a long way in Yemen right now. If it can help save the life of a child like Mohamed, isn’t it worth it? We can make a difference - not just in one life, but in many.
