Mukhtar’s mother holds him, rocking back and forth. She hasn’t eaten in three days. She barely drinks water.
Her mind is racing, flashing images of her dying son. Her neighbors all know the boy is in bad shape - They can hear the mother’s cries as they echo through the village all night long.
“The boy can’t keep in food. He eats and it passes right through him, he gets no nutrients. They are having a hard time affording diapers, powders, tissues, wipes, clothes. Not to mention the food.”
There is nobody to take him to the hospital.
The other child needs constant care, and the father works all day to save for treatment. Luckily Mukhtar’s aunt is very close to him. She’s like a second mother. She volunteers to make the long journey to the hospital to seek treatment.
Their house isn’t pretty. No furniture, no beds, the food is prepared outside on a fire, the adults and children sleep on the floor. It protects them from the sun and rain, but that’s about it.
“They were able to sell everything of value they had and then borrowed. That got them 200,000 Riyal ($800). But it isn’t enough for a complete treatment. They won’t be able to afford the blood transfusion. They won’t be able to afford the medicine.”
The boy needs treatment. Without help they will have to return home and wait for Mukhtar to die.
“Before we left for the hospital - I sat with my sister. She hasn’t eaten or drinken for days. She was staring and sitting with her son, waiting for him to live or die. I pray for the boy, and I pray for my sister as well.”
